Review of La Gazelle D’Or Taroudant, Morocco

La Gazelle d’Or is an extraordinary place to stay in Taroudant: close to the city walls, set in beautiful manicured lawns to the distant Atlas Mountains and offering a unique sense of luxury, tranquillity and peace.

The Gazelle d’Or was created by a French baron in the 1920s for his many relations and friends around the world. The current owners bought the property in 1981 and re-instated the magic and luxury of the hotel while maintaining its unique Morocco-meets-Provence style.

All the current buildings have been redecorated and refurbished over the years. There are now over thirty flower-covered cottage suites within luxuriant gardens of fragrant roses, elegant palms and tumbling bougainvillea. Each room is decorated in a unique blend of traditional Moroccan style and contemporary European design, featuring a spacious lounge with traditional furnishings, fireplace and private terrace overlooking the beautifully manicured lawns and parkland. Rooms are equipped with a bathroom, telephone, TV, mini-bar and many other comfort creatures.

Food at the Gazelle d’Or is superb, be it the breakfast served at your terrace, lunch by the pool, candel-lit dinner on the restaurant terrace or beneath the tented ceiling of the formal dining room decorated with Berber motifs. The cuisine is of very high standard and prepared from the organic vegetables, dairy products, fruits and herbs grown from the hotel’s private estate.

Facilities at the Gazelle d’Or include two tennis courts, horse-riding, croquet, hammam, massage, aromatherapy treatments and a 24-metre swimming pool. If you want to go exploring, the hotel organises trips to the fascinating town of Taroudant and its colourful souks as well as excursions into the snow-topped Atlas Mountains.
