Review of Riad Tanja Tangier, Morocco

Moha Fedal, the innovative chef behind famous Marrakech restaurant Dar Moha, has managed to conquer Tangier with the elegant three-years old Riad-Restaurant Tanja.

Located on the edge of the Medina, next to the American Legation Museum, this restored mansion offers stylish accommodation and fantastic Moroccan cuisine – a combination that’s proving wildly successful.

Behind the thick, green door is a peaceful, covered courtyard with a rose petal-strewn fountain, tadelakt, zellij interior and bejmat floor. The exceedingly comfortable rooms are in a stylish mix of modern design and traditional Moroccan architecture, all with the same tadelaktzellij, and bejmatcombination. All rooms are individually furnished with myriad paintings and prints, a reminder of Tangier’s artistic heritage. From the rooftop terrace, you can enjoy grand views across the port and into the Bay of Tangier.

The fantastic Moroccan salon-restaurant is reason enough to stay at Riad Tanja. In sleek salons with thick Berber rugs and tadelakt walls, innovative chef Moha Fedal is serving his signature nouvelle cuisine marocaine. The set five-course menu travels the length and width of Morocco with imaginative dishes full of flair. With a choice of red-pepper dumplings or zucchini ice-cream, grated carrots with tangerine or spider crab flesh briouates, the surprises are never ending!

With its unique location in a very old corner of the city, friendly atmosphere and superior, personal service, Riad Tanja is one of Tangier’s premier maisons d’hôte.
