Safi: Arrival, Orientation and Transport

There are two main squares in Safi: Place de l’Indépendance and Place Mohammed V. Place de l’Indépendance is the main square of the Medina and the fortress, the lower part of town. Place Mohammed V, on the hills to the east, is the centre of the Ville Nouvelle, flanked by the city’s main administrative buildings.

By Bus

The bus station is around 1 kilometer south of the Medina. Note that most buses do not originate here but rather make a stop from other destinations.

CTM buses run daily services to Agadir, CasablancaEl Jedida and Essaouira. Private companies run run slightly cheaper departures to the same destinations as well as to Oualidia and Tiznit.

By Grand Taxi

The grand taxi lot is beside the bus station, some 1 kilometre to the south of the Medina. Taxis from here run to Casablanca, Marrakech and Essaouira

For Oualidia and El Jedida, the grand taxi station is 1 kilometre north of town on the El Jedida road.

By Train

The train station is situated a kilometer or so to the south of the Medina. From the terminal, you can take a bus or a petit taxi to either of the main squares in the centre of Safi.

The train station operates two services a day to Benguerir, where you can connect for Rabat, Casablanca and Marrakech.

Tourist Office in Safi

Despite being light on tourists, Safi boasts two tourist offices. There is the centrally located Syndicat d’Initiative on Rue de la Liberté near the Hotel Assif. It is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 – 12:00 & 15:00 – 19:00 – there are is no phone or fax number! Or you can try the ONMT Délégation de Tourisme on Rue Imam Malik (south of the bus station).
