Arrival, Orientation and Transport in Meknes
The layout of Meknes is simpler than it would appear in a map. To the east bank of the river valley of Oued Boufekrane is the Ville Nouvelle. The focal point here is a stretch of garden and a fountain of the impressive public square Place Administrative.
To the west bank of the river is the old quarters or Medina with the walls of the impressive Moulay Ismail’s Ville Imperiale edging away to the south. The focal point is Place el Hadim, a vast plaza with shops, fountains and arcades. This is a good place to catch petit taxis, grand taxis and buses to local destinations.
Arrival in Meknes
There are two main bus stations in Meknes: the main one to the north of Mellah, just outside Beb el Khemis and a new CTM bus station on Avenue de Fes, east of the Ville Nouvelle.
Equally, there are two train stations, both in the Ville Nouvelle. The main station is a mile away from the central Place Administrative. The second, smaller but more convenient, is the Gare el Amir Abdelkader a couple of blocks from the central area. Note that trains stop at both stations.
Grand taxis from destinations outside Meknes use the “gare routiére” outside the new bus station on Avenue de Fes east of the Ville Nouvelle. For local destinations, look for the yards near Place el Hadim in the Medina and on Rue Omar al Moutahida in the Ville Nouvelle.
