Review of Riad Jonan Marrakech

Riad Jonan is a beautiful riad in the Medina of Marrakech that blends traditional deisgn with luxury facilities to offer an oasis of tranquillity and peace. It is located in the Royal Quarter, close to the Saadian Tombs and only a few minutes walk from Djemaa el Fna.

The Riad was extensively restored and extended by its live-in English owners, Howard and Martyn, and complemented with hand-made furniture from the craftsmen of the Medina.

On the ground floor is a pretty courtyard with hand laid taracotta tiled floors, Arabian style open fireplace, flowering plants and a comfortable dining area for cosy evening meals. A second courtyard, the former neighbourhood, has a heated plunge pool for those that need to cool down in the summer months or deep their feet in and relax from a busy day in the Medina.

The ground floor houses two of the bedrooms and one deluxe room, cooler in the summer months. Also in the ground floor is the salon with a dining area, satellite television, English-speaking channels and a music system.

The second-floor comprises four more bedrooms with a courtyard and fountain view. All rooms are ensuite and come with air-conditionning and heating. From this level, there is a blue-domed stairwell that leads to the seventh room and the roof-terrace. The roof-top terrace is a heaven in itself, with your own private solarium surrounded by terracotta pots with palms and bourgainvillea.

Food at the Jonan is provided by a full-time chef who prepares hearty Moroccan dishes, ranging from salads to the traditional tagine and couscous. The owners will also be on hand to recommend tried and tested restaurants if you wish to dine in town.
