Review of Riad Sheherazade Fes, Morocco
Located close to Batha square at the heart of the Medina, Riad Sheherazade is a former 19th century Vizier residence renovated and refurbished by the best craftsmen of Fez to offer a true palace experience. The water in the fountains, the perfumes in the gardens, the columns, arcades and domed ceilings stay true to its Arabo-Andalusian spirit while the huge patio, luxuriously fitted public areas, top class catering and personalised service insure a comfortable and relaxed stay.
A grand patio, open to the sky, embodies the age-old Moroccan traditional decoration: carved and painted wood, multicoloured zellij and exquisitely carved plaster work, together with light fittings all adding to the pleasures of breakfast in the sun or dining by candlelight. You will find here a lush garden, rich with the intoxicating perfumes of jasmine and orange flowers, a kiosk and a winter restaurant, in the purest Moorish style, alongside a swimming pool bordered by palm trees. The traditional salons, with their shimmering hand-embroidered fabrics illustrate well the art of Fassi living.
In the spirit of a “Thousand and One Nights”, Riad Sheherazade offers 13 rooms and suites all classically designed with a mix of simple and ornate. Rooms are spacious with cedarwood-carved doors and bedheads, light fittings in pierced copper, hand-embroidered shantung silk fabrics and come equipped with a host of modern amenities including air-conditioning, satellite TV, Wifi Internet connection, mini-bar and safe-deposit box.
Leisurely moments are numerous: you can have mint tea in the Andalusian Kiosk or on the panoramic terrace overlooking the Medina; relax near the pool or in the hammam, or unwind at the sauna or Jacuzzi. A pretty conservatory by the pool serves as a dining room, or you can dine in the large courtyard or Moroccan salon. A speciality of the house is couscous with quails and chicken, studded with fruit. Wine is available.
