Review of Dar El Ghalia Fes, Morocco

Dar el Ghalia is a charming riad situated in a narrow street in the middle of the medina of Fes. This handsomely restored 18th-century palace offers a refined atmosphere, good service and stylish accommodation to suit all budgets.

A Prince Palace that dates back hundreds of years, the guest house is named after the late Hadj Omar Lebbar who founded it. Today, it is owned and personally managed by his grand siblings Omar and Nadia, who take great pride in keeping the family tradition alive. The enthusiasm of the owners can be seen in the painstakingly recrafted cedar ceilings and the naming of the suites after the women who had marked the palace by their presence in the past. There is also the personal touch that makes this Dar feel more like a friend’s house than a hotel.

Dar el Ghalia offers its guests the choice of 4 junior suites, each with bedroom and sitting room, a Royal Suite with three bedrooms and two bathrooms and a central sitting room with fireplace and six misryates (small bedrooms with bathrooms). All rooms are decorated in a lush oriental style and traditional furnishings that will transport you into an authentic fairy tale of thousand and one nights.

Dar el Ghalia contains Dar Tajine, one of the best known restaurants in Fes, which exclusively serves the guests of the house. You can choose from set menus or à la carte: there are salads, excellent Harira, grills, fresh fish, tagines and couscous. Have your breakfast or dinner from the roof-top terrace where you can enjoy fine panoramic views of the ancient city.

Other facilities at Dar el Ghalia include a comfortable sitting room and hammam.
