With its strategic position at the crossroads of important north-south and west-east roads in Morocco, Errachidia was established by the French as a regional capital and military outpost. Today, it retains much of its administrative character and a large army garrison is still stationed there.
The town is unexciting and has little to offer in terms of tourist attractions. It is nevertheless a relaxed place to stay and break your journey if you’re heading north to Midelt or Meknes or South to Merzouga.
Errachidia hosts an increasingly prestigious event, Festival du Desert, each May since 2003. Thousands of international visitors join local people and artists among the dunes of the Sahara, in celebration of the music and culture of the Sahara.
