Cascades d’Ouzoud: Spectacular Waterfalls in Morocco

About 167 kilometers northeast of Marrakech are the most spectacular waterfalls in Morocco: the Cascades d’Ouzoud. It is well worth the effort of getting there and if you are in Marrakech it’s an easy day trip from there – by car or grand taxi.

The Cascades d’Ouzoud is popular with Moroccans and tourists alike particularly in weekends and summer. Despite its attraction and unique ambiance, the falls are not too crowded and, as yet, refreshingly not commercialised. The area as a whole is quite impressively set in a lush valley with the falls an unusual series of plunges on several levels. The Oued Ouzou – Ouzou River – drops spectacularly some 110 meters into the canyon of the Oued el-Abid – el-Abid River – below.

You can enjoy some spectacular views from café terraces or camping tents along the way down to the falls. To enjoy the spectacle fully, walk down and get sprayed with the mist of the stumbling water or swim in one of the fabulous natural pools below the cascades.

If you are down for the day, you can go for a memorable short hike to explore the fascinating wooded hills around and experience the laid-back village life of the local Berbers.
