Review of Lokfel House Ait Benhaddou, Morocco
Lokfel House is a charming new guesthouse at the entrance of Ait Benhaddou village. Opened in May 2008 by a French couple with a professional catering background, Lokfel is already getting good reports thanks to its authentic décor, good service and excellent cuisine.
Constructed in red pisé throughout, the guesthouse features ten stylish rooms – for one, two or three people – fully decorated in tadelkat, floors covered with Berber rugs, paintings and local finds. All rooms come with a decent-sized bathroom. There is also a large, cosy patio with comfortable lounges and a clay-brick fireplace perfect for those cold winter nights.
Dining at Lofkel is at the adjoining restaurant, immaculately-styled with low-laying Moroccan tables and chairs. The cuisine is French-Moroccan, with a grill section, and most of the ingredients are sourced from local agricultural cooperatives.
The two large panoramic terraces, stretching the length of Lokfel House, is where you want to spend most of your time. Find a shady spot, or ask for your meals to be taken here, and let the hours wither away while you enjoy the panoramic view.
A great draw of Lokfel House is the excellent range of services offered to discover the South of Morocco. The owner, Pascal, has a wealth of knowledge of the area and can arrange 4X4 drives with or without guide, camel, mule and horse walks, trekking in the oases and Atlas, bivouacs in the desert and much more.
